Abstract
Washed suspensions of ciliated protozoa from the rumen of cattle were incubated with surface-active agents. Dioctyl sodium sulphosuccinate (‘Manoxol OT’), alcohol ethoxylates (‘Teries’) , and polyoxypropylene-polyoxyethylene block polymers (‘Pluronics’) produced toxie effects ranging from inhibition of motility to cell disintegration. At low levels (0.01-0.05%) sime detergents stimulated gas production from endogenous metabolism of the holotricha, but no effect was observed when glucose was fermented. Keywords
