Abstract
Following the recent publication of infra-red measurements on crystals of Al2O3 containing Mn3+ ions, a detailed theoretical analysis of the system has been undertaken. From these results and our earlier APR measurements, it is shown by computer analysis that all the data for this 5E ion can be satisfactorily explained by a multimode lattice model of the Jahn-Teller effect. The values q = 0.50, r = 0.70 and p finite are found for the Jahn-Teller reduction factors, so that (2 q — p) is less than unityKeywords
