This manuscript describes female partner abuse and reviews its significance to health care providers. Attention is given to the essential nursing roles of screening for abuse, intervening with women at risk for abuse, and completing a needed examination when abuse has occurred. Ideas for an expanded nursing role are provided. Keywords
