Abstract
The author discusses the Japanese Information Network System (INS) which will be a blend of computer and telecommunications technologies. Using several transmission media, i.e. copper wire, optical-fiber cable, satellites, and radio, the system will tie telephones; data, facsimile, and video terminals; switching systems; and computers into one network, digitally carrying not only the human voice, but also data and still and moving pictures. This system is expected to serve individuals as well as businesses of all sizes.
