Abstract
We present X-ray temperature and surface brightness maps of the rich cluster of galaxies Abell 2142. The surface brightness is elliptical with a major axis at the same position angle as the two brightest galaxies in the cluster as well as the line connecting them. The temperature structure in this cluster consists of a cool region centered on one of the two brightest galaxies and a large hot region. Both the surface brightness and temperature maps indicate that A2142 is in the late stages of a merger, beginning the process of relaxation. Keywords
