Lithops insularis, a non-halophytic member of the Mesembryanthemaceae, is shown to exhibit major features if crassulacean acid metabolism. Data are presented which demonstrate the accumulation, by this plant, of malic acid synthesised in darkness from carbon dioxide. Keywords
