Abstract
ACCORDING to the classic definition, hormones are substances that are secreted by certain tissues and are carried by the circulation to other tissues, where their metabolic effects appear. Only in very recent years has progress been made in understanding how hormones exert their metabolic effects on target tissues. It is now clear that one mechanism through which a hormone can act is to stimulate the formation of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (AMP) within a target cell; cyclic AMP then acts within the cell to carry out the metabolic work familiarly attributed to the hormone.Discovery of Cyclic AMPIn the 1940's . . .Keywords
