Abstract
The pituitary gland was partially or totally removed in 66 rats. Complete hypophysectomy produced a temporary diabetes insipidus (DI) in 28 of 34 rats, a permanent DI in none. In 26 rats in which the posterior lobe was entirely removed but part of the anterior lobe remained, permanent DI was found, the degree apparently depending on the amt. of the anterior lobe remaining, and whether or not this lobe was still in connection with the pituitary stalk; 6 rats in which parts of the posterior lobe remained (probably still in connection with the stalk) showed no DI. The present research regarding the importance of the anterior lobe in DI confirms the conclusion arrived at by von Hann in 1918 from a study of clinical material in man.
