Abstract
The incorporation of the 14C of acetate-l-14C into cholesterol was studied in liver slices prepared from hypophysectomized rats that had received 14 daily injections of adrenal glucocorticoids either alone or combined with L-thyroxine. Glucocorticoids depressed the conversion of acetate carbon to cholesterol in the liver of the hypophysectomized rat. Our earlier finding, that 14 daily injections of L-thyroxine to hypophysectomized rats increased, to a considerable extent, the capacity of their livers to convert acetate carbon to cholesterol, was reaffirmed. When glucocorticoids and L-thyroxine were administered simultaneously, the stimulating effect of L-thyroxine on the conversion of acetate carbon to cholesterol was not observed.
