Abstract
Carbon fibre composites have been prepared in which the tensile strength developed in the fibre bundle agrees with theoretical predictions at 4.3 GPa (620 kpsi). It is shown that the appropriate single filament strength to be used when calculating maximum composite strengths is that of a bundle of fibres 0.3 mm long, and that fibre alignment and/or packing are important parameters which can drastically influence composite tensile strength. A method of measuring fibre bundle strength in composite is described. Keywords
