The inclusion of control serum samples for the estimation of serum iron by the Kingsley-Getchell bathophenanthroline and the Ramsay dipyridyl methods is necessary in order to correct for nonspecific absorption of serum pigments. In the absence of control samples, serum iron concentration may be from 25 to 90 per cent too high.
