Abstract
A two-dimensional model is presented for studying the effect of progressive debonding on the deformation and fracture of composites. Using a special adaptation of the finite element technique, stress and deformation fields of the model under uniaxial compressive stress are computed on an incremental basis. The interface between the matrix and inclusion is modeled by a boundary layer of elements for which the strength characteristics are assigned on the basis of earlier experimental work. Based on predefined bond strength criteria, two modes of debonding are assumed: compression-shear and tensile-shear debonding. Progressive failure behavior and overall deformation as well as local deformations and their discontinuities are briefly reviewed. Good agreement between theory and experiment is obtained.Keywords
