Abstract
It is shown that the strength of the van der Waals interaction between two physisorbed molecules on a metal surface is reduced considerably from the free-space value when the molecules get embedded in the spilled electrons at the metal surface. The reduction in the limit of large separation depends on the ratio of the surface plasmon frequency to the principal molecular absorption frequency. Keywords
