The Potential of Lymphocytes from Patients with Leukaemia and Reticuloses to Transform under the Influence of Phytohaemagglutinin

Abstract
A study was made of the ability of lymphocytes from 24 patients with chronic lymphatic leukemia to respond to stimulation with PHA [phytohemagglutinin] in vitro. Normal degree of transformation was found in cultures from only 7 of these patients. The degree of transformation of leukemic cells could not be influenced by the presence of normal plasma, and chronic lymphatic leukemia plasma had no depressing effect on the degree of transformation in normal cultures. Normal transformation was found in patients with Hodgkin''s disease, and plasma from patients with Hodgkin''s disease had no influence on the transformation of normal lymphocytes. In only 3 cultures of normal cells in the presence of plasma from patients with chronic myeloid leukemia was any disturbance in normal transformation found. Possible explanations of the implications of these findings are discussed.
