Biophysical Requirements for the Ventilation of Clothing

Abstract
The forced internal ventilation of clothing is a potential method for economical protection against high, low, and changing temps. Air of controlled temp. and flow is blown under an impermeable coverall over the skin (or underwear). Insulative or protective clothing is worn over the coverall. This outer clothing insulates the ventilating air from the environment. The theory, and physical and physiological limitations are set forth. Results are summarized of expts. in which thermal balance was maintained in the range -30 to +180[degree]F. A general nomogram is given for the estimation of the amt. of heat to be removed or supplied by the ventilating air for an ambient temp. range of -40 to +180[degree]F, outer insulation of from 1 to 5 clo, and activity levels of from basal to ''hard work.'' A 2d nomogram is given as an example of the relation between enthalpy change of the ventilating air, its mass flow rate, and its inlet temp.Keywords
