Abstract
In this excerpt from his recent book, America's Third Revolution, former chief executive at Du Pont Irving Shapiro insists that the main task of the CEO is communication. Too often managers rely strictly on systems and techniques at the sacrifice of personal contact with employees. If management does not communicate its values and concern for employees, it loses the cooperation necessary to run an effective organization. The author cites examples from successful American companies (including Du Pont) to demonstrate how the internal climate of the corporation can benefit from a more open relationship between managers and employees. Keywords
