Abstract
The crystal structure of tetragonal tellurium dioxide was studied using neutron diffraction. The space group is either P 4 1 2 1 2 or P 4 3 2 1 2. The lattice constants are: a = 4.796 Å, c = 7.626 Å, c / a = 1.59. New oxygen-atom parameters were determined. The coordination polyhedron of the tellurium atom is a distorted square pyramid with Te at the apex. The Te–O distances are: 1.91 Å (twice) and 2.09 Å (twice). The pyramids are linked by common oxygen atoms. The geometrical similarity to the rutile type is discussed. Keywords
