Abstract
Some 23 years ago, after much searching, I had the good fortune to come to know Herman Feifel, a man for whom psychology was as big as life. This was demonstrated by his concern with death. At that moment in American history, our society had its eyes closed so that it could not see or be seen by Death. The medical establisment was also holding its breath and wishing hard in the hope that Feifel would also go away and take death with him. Nevertheless, Herman was as persistent as the IRS even if at times this made him just as unpopular. Energized by his insights and his intellectual curiosity, Feifel was in the process of helping change forever the attitude of American society toward death. Keywords
