Aqueous Humour and Cornea Stroma Metabolite Levels under Various Conditions

Abstract
The aqueous humour and cornea stroma glucose, lactate and pyruvate levels were investigated after the removal of the epithelium, after freezing the cornea in vivo and after surgical removal of the endothelium. From the changes in the levels of these metabolites in vivo it was concluded that, in the aqueous humour, a remarkable portion of the lactate originated from the cornea. Besides, the leakage of glucose from the denuded stroma surface did not produce a deficit of nutrient metabolites in the cornea.
