Parkinsonism and Hyperthyroidism

Abstract
There is a definite similarity between some of the signs and symptoms of parkinsonism and hyperthyroidism. The presence of one disease process may overshadow the existence of the other, when the two occur simultaneously. Moreover, there is usually an exaggeration of one process by the other, especially of parkinsonian symptoms by the hyperthyroid state. The few cases previously described in literature and the three cases presented here show that treatment of the hyperthyroid state leads to a marked decrease in the severity of parkinsonian symptoms. A proposed mechanism which interrelates the action of thyroid hormone, catecholamines and their combined effects on a central adrenergic system is outlined and may explain the similarity and the relationship between parkinsonism and hyperthyroidism.
