Abstract
The pressure-volume diagram of the human aorta is S-shaped in young persons and changes with increasing age in a regular way so that the turning point shifts increasingly into the region of low pressure and finally disappears completely from about the 60th year of life. By means of rubber tube models, made from highly elastic rubber combined with less elastic nylon material, pressure-volume diagrams can be demonstrated which resemble either the young or the old aorta. It is concluded that the typical form of each characteristic state of the aorta is conditioned by the special histotectonic arrangement of the elastic and the collagen connective tissue in the wall of the aorta. The combined action of these two materials in the stretching of the aorta wall in youth and in old age is shown by means of a diagram and is considered in relation to the morphologically evident changes with age in the wall of the aorta. Keywords
