The effect of selection during multiplication on the bolting resistance and internal quality of Avonearly red beet

Abstract
Stocks of Avonearly red beet were raised by three different multiplication regimes, both once-and twice-multiplied seed lots being produced from each regime. The derived stocks were then grown with the original stock in replicated trials to compare their bolting resistance and internal quality of the roots. Large differences in bolting were found, depending on the type of selection imposed during multiplication and the particular season in which this selection occurred. No differences in internal quality were detected.
