Abstract
The butanol-extractable (thyroxine) I131 and the protein-bound (PB) I131 levels in plasma 24 hours after administration of a tracer dose of I131 were studied in 50 euthyroid, 12 hyperthyroid and 5 myxedematous subjects. These 2 measures are closely correlated, the former comprising approximately four-fifths of the latter. They separate euthyroid from hyperthyroid individuals very effectively but are not of value in distinguishing myxedematous patients. The ratio of butanol-extractable to PB I131 has no diagnostic value. The ratio of butanol-extractable to total plasma I131 is similar in discriminative effectiveness to the PB I131 conversion ratio. Keywords
