Rehabilitation for the Elderly: An Eleven- Year Assessment

Abstract
An 11-year study was undertaken of 1,135 discharged geriatric patients from rehabilitation service in a skilled nursing home during the period from March, 1963 through 1974; 693 (or 61%) of the patients aged 62 - 99 were discharged to independent living. This high rate of return to independent living was made possible through a health team approach to include an intensive therapy treatment plan and a social work co-ordinative role. The potential of this type of team approach and numbers of needed nursing home beds may be intertwined.
