Abstract
Clipping 1 or more spines in the dorsal and anal fins was used to identify individual Tilapia. In fish > 15 cm the mark was permanent. In smaller fish spine regeneration occurred, but clipped spines could be recognized both by their incomplete regrowth and abnormal appearance. This technique is applicable not only to experimental situations requiring recognition of individuals but also to group marking and to other Perciforms.
