Abstract
Scotland's position within the United Kingdom has historically been governed by contractual principles. Like much of the UK constitution, these were based on convention and unwritten understanding. Changes in UK politics, in Scottish politics and the external support system have undermined this arrangement. The union is under increasing strain as Scottish interests seek to establish new arrangements within the UK and Europe. Keywords
