Abstract
The familial incidence of lupus erythematosus has been recognized for many years, for in 1901 Rona21described the condition in a brother and sister. In 1903 Sequeira1presented 2 families each with 2 sisters with lupus erythematosus. Legobbe23in 1937 was impressed by the finding of systemic lupus erythematosus in 8 members of one family and in 4 members of another family. In recent years the occurrence of 2 or more cases in one family has been reported with increasing frequency; however, lupus erythematosus in identical twins is rare. Von Gruenhagen5reported the occurrence of the discoid type, and Davis and Gutridge3plus Wagenhals and Burgeson13published cases of fatal systemic lupus erythematosus in identical twin sisters.
