The familial incidence of lupus erythematosus has been recognized for many years, for in 1901 Rona21described the condition in a brother and sister. In 1903 Sequeira1presented 2 families each with 2 sisters with lupus erythematosus. Legobbe23in 1937 was impressed by the finding of systemic lupus erythematosus in 8 members of one family and in 4 members of another family. Von Gruenhagen5reported the occurrence of the discoid type, and Davis and Gutridge3plus Wagenhals and Burgeson13published cases of fatal systemic lupus erythematosus in identical twin sisters.
