Abstract
Fiber-optic links using directly modulated semiconductor lasers and direct detection are attractive for communications and microwave signal transmission because of the small size, flexibility, large bandwidth, and low loss of optical fibers and because of the large bandwidths of semiconductor lasers1 and detectors. Many groups have pursued high-speed long-wavelength lasers where the fiber distance-bandwidth product is several orders of magnitude larger than at GaAlAs wavelengths. Keywords
