Deterministic and Stochastic Effects in Population Dynamics

Abstract
An age-structured model based on an extension of the equations for convective flow is constructed and tested for laboratory populations of sheep blowflies. The model is shown to be capable of reproducing major frequency components in the data not hitherto predicted by deterministic models. Through the introduction of stochastic mortality and fecundity, the effects of individual variation are taken into account, thus extending the model’s validity to very low population levels.
