Abstract
Artificial inductors were developed to study qualitatively and quantitatively the phagocytosis of nonliving particles by A. proteus. The experimental system included nylon microcapsules, ion-exchange particles and treated glass beads. Results showed that there were 2 fundamental mechanisms of phagocytosis in A. proteus. The 1st mechanism, related to the ingestion of living prey or particles that diffused chemotactic substances, involved biphasic activity of the chemotactic substances. The 2nd mechanism, in connection with insoluble particle phagocytosis, involved the presence of a positive charge at the surface of the particle. This publication has 4 references indexed in Scilit:
