AVIAN SALMONELLOSIS

Abstract
48 Salmonella strains other than S. gallinarum and S. pullorum have been isolated from Aves, and 42 of these have also been isolated from man. 18 of these 48 types were originally isolated from avian spp. and 14 of the 18 have since been isolated from man. This paper reports on 561 cultures from 353 avian outbreaks caused by 23 different antigenic types. S. typhimurium accounted for 60% of 291 outbreaks in turkeys and for 35% of 43 outbreaks in chickens; S. bareilly accounted for 42% of the outbreaks in chickens, but only for 5% of those in turkeys. Each type of Salmonella encountered in the surveys reported is briefly discussed in relation to its importance to mortality in birds and also in relation to the public health.
