Abstract
Undesirable side-effects from sulfisoxazole (Gantrisin) therapy occur in less than 0.1% of cases according to Yow's1recent study on 1,000 consecutive patients; yet, there have been occasional reports in the literature concerning untoward toxic reactions of sulfisoxazole. These have included maculopapular rash, urticaria, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, headache and vertigo,2leukopenia,3agranulocytosis,4hematuria,5hypoprothrombinemia,6petechial hemorrhages,7and vesicles and bullae in localized areas.8The purpose of this study is to report a severe and unique allergic response to sulfisoxazole. On April 26, 1954, a 77-year-old female sustained a fall, injuring her left shoulder and hip. She was admitted to the orthopedic service of St. Francis Hospital, Evanston, Ill., where x-rays revealed a fracture of the surgical neck of the left humerus and an intertrochanteric fracture of the left femur without displacement.
