Abstract
A modified form of Belcher's cross-cultural level of living scale was used to measure level of living among 157 elderly family households in a plantation economy. Fewer than 1 in 5 of the households have access to those goods and services considered necessary for the efficient performance of basic household functions. Level of living was found to be determined more by the plantation production system and the elderly's past patterns of economic participation in the system than by the size of the completed family.
