Abstract
Supportive care is now recognised as an important part of good practice in the management of people with cancer. However, few models exist which describe such services. The Neil Cliffe Cancer Care Charity was established five years ago in response to a perceived need to provide a local, community based service for people with cancer, and their carers, from the point of diagnosis. The nature of the problems identified by people using the service have been closely monitored and professional and voluntary staff have been recruited to develop the service in response to client need. Evaluation of the service, including both the impact of the service on individual well-being and the specific therapeutic interventions which are components of the service is underway, however early indications are that the type of supportive care offered has a positive effect on an individual’s self report of coping and sense of well being. This article describes the role of the service in supporting people with cancer and their carers. Keywords
