Abstract
It is shown that the phase transition in bismuth titanate (at 675 °C) cannot be caused by the onset of parameters belonging to an irreducible representation. The parameters of the transition are divided into two sets; one leading to the symmetry B2cb, the other being responsible for the onset of the polarisation Pc. The former set of parameters is found and is shown to belong to a reducible representation.
