Abstract
A method for treating meson fields whose expectation values must vanish because of symmetry is presented in terms of a simplified model of pions, nucleons, and deltas constituting a model alpha particle. Self-consistent equations for the wave functions are derived from the variational principle. The relation to the mean-field procedure, which can be used for fields with expectation values, is discussed. Keywords
