Abstract
In addition to the potential diagnostic application of the findings, this study may also facilitate insight into mechanisms of thyroid cancer development and progression, since many of the gene expression changes are indicative of alterations in specific signaling pathways or cellular functions. This study, a meta-analysis of 21 published gene profiling studies in thyroid cancer, identifies a set of consistently reported gene expression changes that are potential candidates for inclusion in a panel for a diagnostic test for malignant thyroid cancer. While some of these candidates, such as MET, TFF3, and TPO, are well-known thyroid cancer markers, others are novel. It is also interesting that a significant fraction of the gene changes highlighted in this study were previously identified by Giordano et al. (Giordano et al., Oncogene 2005, 24:6646-6656 [PMID:16007166]) as specific for BRAF mutated thyroid cancer, and were not as marked in Ras mutated thyroid cancer. Keywords
