Abstract
Theoretical and experimental results on the structure and properties of grain boundaries in ionic crystals are reviewed and several models for grain boundary structures and their usefulness assessed. The results of calculations using computer simulation techniques for grain boundary structures and point defect properties are summarised. Experimental work on grain boundary structure and energies is discussed and compared with the available theoretical calculations, with suggestions for the apparent discrepancies where necessary. Keywords
