Abstract
THE PREVALENCE of childhood and adolescent obesity has increased steadily during the past 3 decades. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) document a 6% increase in the absolute prevalence of obesity in US children between 1980 and 1994.1 Obesity is now a major pediatric health risk factor in the United States, as it is in adults.2 Childhood and adolescent obesity may lead to hypertension, diabetes, coronary heart disease, and some cancers.3,4Keywords
