Abstract
The temperature-induced changes in line shape and frequency of the internal stretching mode have been studied with Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy for terminally bonded CO on Ru(001). The data fit a dephasing model and allow us to determine the frequency of the external mode with which the energy exchange occurs. This mode is identified as the frustrated translation of the molecule parallel to the surface. Keywords
