Abstract
A solution to the long-standing problem of the companion Raman line [symmetric breathing mode of Ge tetrahedra] in Ge glasses is proposed based on the observation of a similar doublet in the crystal. The proposed model assumes that -Ge consists of units with a layered structure, in sharp contradistinction to -Si, which consists of a random, fully three-dimensional network.
