Abstract
Infrared absorption spectra of α—UO3, β—UO3, U3O8, and UO2 have been observed in the spectral region from 4000 down to 90 cm—1. By assuming a modified central force field for the previously determined crystal structure of α—UO3, frequencies of the four infrared‐active and two Raman‐active lattice vibrations have been calculated. On the basis of the results of these calculations and on the basis of the comparison of the four spectra, all of the eight bands observed for α—UO3 are reasonably assigned either to the infrared‐active fundamentals or to infrared‐active combination tones. Brief discussions are also given on the force constants obtained for α—UO3 and on the absorption bands of other three uranium oxides. Keywords
