Abstract
To increase the output of Laminaria in Japan, considerable importance has been attached to the propagation of Laminaria that grow on natural reefs. Various methods of propagation have been used, namely, planting of stones and blasting of reefs. In spite of these efforts, the productivity of Laminaria of good quality has fluctuated remarkably, and further, it has been decreasing gradually. A method of cultivation was then tried. At first, however, production of Laminaria of good quality did not increase readily, because this plant usually requires two winters to attain its commercial size.As a result, the improvement of techniques for cultivating Laminaria has become an important subject for research workers. During the study of the cultivative process, we have succeeded in developing techniques for rearing 2-yr-old plants in 1 yr without debasing their quality. This method is called the "Forced Cultivation Technique."Since 1969 the yield of cultivated plants using this technique has increased remarkably in various districts from the south of Hokkaido to the northern part of the mainland of Japan.
