Variation du genre Neomys Kaup, 1829 (Mammalia, Insectivora) dans le secteur cantabro-galicien de la péninsule Ibérique

Abstract
The variation in size and other characteristics of the species of the genus Neomys in the western half of the Iberian Peninsula were studied. N. fodiens increases considerably in size from Navarra to the borders of Santander and Oviedo provinces, where it reaches its maximum size, then starts decreasing westward, more quickly along the coast than inland. In Galicia, the western limits of its distribution, it reaches a size very similar to that of specimens in the rest of Europe. This situation makes the existence of the subspecies N. fodiens niethammeri, whose description is fundamentally based on size, doubtful. A comparison between the frequencies of both species of Neomys in owl pellets was made. Three regions can be considered in the area studied: the eastern presents high frequencies of N. fodiens and low frequencies of N. anomalus; the central presents similar frequencies of both species; and in the western, N. anomalus almost completely substitutes N. fodiens.
