Abstract
Summary A survey of seedlings from 21 commercial sowings of lettuce was conducted during the 1982 growing season primarily to obtain information on the range of nutrient concentrations of vegetable seedlings produced in UK commercial horticulture. Comparing the nutrient concentrations in plants from the 21 sites with critical levels from the literature showed that 15 sites produced plants with less than the critical concentration of phosphate and 15 with less than the critical concentration of nitrogen. There was considerable variation in the weights of the sampled plants from sowing to sowing, much of which could be accounted for by differences in average daily temperature between sowing and sampling, although there was still a significant proportion that was not accounted for by any of the recorded plant or soil characteristics. Variation in total root length was largely explained by differences in plant weight, but the root length/plant weight ratio decreased with increasing average air temperature. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
