Abstract
On exposed shores with rocky bottom, 3 natural regions are found (a) littoral, with 13 associations; (b) sublittoral, with 3; (c) pools and caves, with 2. Sheltered shores are considered to fall naturally under 7 heads, each of the first 4 of which is again subdivided into the regions littoral, sublittoral, pools, and caves, unless the nature of the head is such that the regions do not apply. The 7 heads follow: (1) Rocky bottom, with 15 littoral associations, of which 8 are also found on exposed rocky shores; 3 sublittoral; 2 of pools and caves, one of which also occurs on exposed rocky shores. (2) Sandy or muddy rock bottom, with 2 littoral associations; 3 sublittoral; 1 of pools. (3) Muddy bottom, with 2 littoral associations; 2 sublittoral. (4) Salt marshes, with 8 associations. (5) Loose-lying plants, among which are Uiva and Monostroma, and are merely driftings into regions in which they are not washed away. (6) Swiftly flowing water; these are regions of exceptionally aerated and constantly renewed waters. (7) Freshwater streams and brackish water; a gradation from fresh to saline moving waters. Under heads 5, 6, and 7 the author merely discusses the flora without recognizing definite associations. The total number of associations recognized is 48; and the primary consideration in classifying associations is the exposure of the coast rather than its substratum. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
