Expressions of Moral Thought in Later Adulthood

Abstract
Thirty-seven older adults were asked to describe a moral problem that they had recently faced. The most commonly reported moral problem involved relationships with family members, especially with regard to matters concerning advice-giving, caregiving, and living arrangements. Only those subjects classified as “young-old” described dilemmas that involved a conflict between one's personal behavior vis-à-vis a legal code. Furthermore, with advancing age a trend appeared for subjects to be unable to identify a personal moral conflict. Practitioners as well as researchers and theorists need to recognize and take into account developmental differences in the formulation and expression of moral issues.
