The Colorimetric Estimation of Minute Amounts of Compounds of Silicon, of Phosphorus and of Arsenic

Abstract
The reagents of Dienert and Wandenbulcke for silicate are not vitiated by phosphate, arsenate, or arsenite in great excess. Denige''s method for phosphate may be used for arsenate, but not arsenite; no error arises from silicate in natural waters. Bell and Doisy''s method for phosphate is less delicate than that of Deniges; it may be used for arsenate but not for arsenite. Pouget and Chouchak''s reaction for phosphate is not given by arsenite and only faintly by arsenate unless warmed. Save in so far as free phosphate is present the Deniges reaction is not given by glycerophosphate, triphenyl phosphate, tricresyl phosphate, vanadates, tungstates, or phosphotungstates. With the last a purple tint comes slowly, but this is not a sensitive reaction.
