Abstract
Cafe-au-lait pigmentation has long been associated with von Recklinghausen''s multiple neurofibromatosis and is a recognized component of the clinical picture. Previous clinical work has shown the presence of 6 or more cafe-au-lait spots greater than 1.5 centimeters in diameter is sufficient to establish a presumptive diagnosis of the disease, even in the pre-tumorous form. Observations presented in this brief communication describe a newly recognized form of cafe-au-lait pigmentation[long dash]axillary freckling. This freckling occurs more often in the axillee, but has been observed in the perineal areas of both sexes. It does not appear in the absence of other forms of hyperpigmentation usually seen in neurofibromatosis. Axillary freckling is another diagnostic aid in the earlier clinical recognition of this protean disease.
