Abstract
The necropsy protocols of 202 consecutive cases and 314 selected cases were studied to determine the relationship of the incidence of pulmonary embolism to that of peripheral thrombosis and various disease and age groups. In 184 consecutive cases, excluding liver disease, the incidence of pulmonary embolism was 14%. In 97 cases of Laennec''s cirrhosis no pulmonary emboli were found, although these cases did not show a decreased incidence of cardiac or peripheral thrombosis. A dissociation of the incidence of thrombosis and pulmonary embolism was also demonstrated in a comparison of age groups. The factors which may be responsible for the embolization of thrombi are discussed. Keywords
